Project Overview

Help to create Innovative, intelligence, meaningful, insightful, Experiences for a NewsUK. NewsUK involves The Sun, The times, The Sunday times, TLS, Wiresless (talksport, Virgin radio) and Sky news. My role was to create new experiences that would create a directions for the company future and guiding them to what can be done. It was green filed project so not limits to what we could try.Everything we tried and developed we tested with real user over a period of time so see what there reactions where.
My Contributions

An experimental team, working within the core platform team to experiment with identity, access and monetisation to find out what's next in digital media. With the remit to experiment and validate in a completely open environment, to help point the business in the direction it needs to go to reach a new demographic.

WHY DO WE NEED TO GET USERS FROM PAPER TO DIGITAL?

So users can Carry on reading
Users are more likely to use their mobile to check the news than carry a paper around.

Paper slow Death
The decline of the newspaper is not getting any slower so if we can get users from paper to digital with ease.

New Engagement
With an aging users NewsUK need to look at a young group of users


Follow the latest Developments
The user can get up today news on an on going event with ease.

Enhances there experience
We can make their experiences of news more exciting, engaging and playful.

Revenue from Advertising
We can show more advert which would be molded to the users preferences which in turn make an engaging experiences.

HOW DO USER GET FROM PAPER TO DIGITAL?

Getting started, I had to understand where and what needed work quickly. I Working closely with Designer and Developers to make sure we are all aligned and get the best outcome. Then produced quick sketches of the motion flows to test with users for feedback.

take a picture of an article and we recognize the headline and  save the digital version for later (WILL NOT BE SHOW)

We can give clients/partners access to our App/Web App API for them to build out experiences though AR.

AR GAMES - HIDE AND SEEK

a hidden object in the paper where a user looks for objects/clues to win something. AR - hidden mini-games (adverts £££) collect them all to win a big prize as well as lots of mini prizes, eg free drinks etc.…

Paper to digital

Navigation is the act of moving between screens of an app to complete tasks. It’s enabled through several means: dedicated navigation components, embedding navigation behavior into content, and platform affordances.

The user can scan a paper from news uk or from any paper, book or object. we will show them relevant news on that subject
We show the content to the user. using user reactions (likes and emojis) we try and capture the feelings from the article but also the user can swipe but to keep reading the content
The user can easily comment about the article to other user or to the author directly. The user can also star the content which helps with ML about there preferences on content. they can also share and set up alerts for updates and related content

The user scans a paper from any publication we recognize it, we show them a relevant article or interactive material such as polling, questions, video or live radio depending on what is recognized. The user can interact with the media or ignore it. If interacted, the user will be given a reward and the result as well as related content to browse. if ignored the user will go directly to the relevant content without reward.

The user can scan a paper from news uk or from any paper, book or object. we will show them relevant news on that subject
For articles About the subject that the user has scanned and the marketing team wish to engage with a user a poll can be created. this could be a yes/no question or multiple choices.
When the user has completed the question the user is given the result as well as all the related news.

COMMENTING

The user can scan a paper from news uk or from any paper, book or object. we will show them relevant news on that subject
The user can recored a reaction to the article. the user can also recored a reply to a video reaction or author
User is show all the related news.
The user can easily comment about the article to other user or to the author directly. The user can also add emoj's.
When the user is watching a reaction the user can comment back or send an emoj.The user has the option to send a reaction back with the plus. which also opens up the emojs and reporting tools.
Live reaction is show the user other user live reaction to what they are saying.

The user scans a paper from a publication that we own (e.g. the sun) the app show the content where the user can interact with a social reaction or swipe up to view the article. If the user reacts with automatically go to the comments section.

The user can scan a paper from news uk or from any paper, book or object. we will show them relevant news on that subject
The user can scan the paper ether though aiming the camera at the headline or images or by tapping on the image or headline
If its a direct match with one of our papers then we will ask the user to rate the content which then opens up commenting.
The user can easily comment about the article to other user or to the author directly.
We learnt from testing that we got more sign ups from getting the user to sign up from the comment page. But it still need to be seamless and painless.

TAKAWAYS

News uk is a massive company with lots of brands and sub brands. what I enjoyed about this project is the fact we could try new ways of thinking and new technology to fit tho brands.

What was challenging was the business thinking. Alot of the product owners and stakeholder to start with where sceptical about what we where trying to create. But when using are prototypes or demos they soon came around - somethings talking is not enough as they as the proof is in the pudding... something like that.

With all of the prototypes we had weekly showcases with all the news uk teams (the sun, times, talksport ect) and meeting with the CTO (Christina Scott) of news where we would pitch ideas with a business model and roll out. This pushed us to iterate quickly and streamline our ideas.

User testing i really enjoyed, users got to play and interact with the prototypes. Alot of the feedback was about AR and how did we could create an advert for there company/brand. also alot where supriesed to see News.uk eveb thinking about AR/MR.

New skills - Learned a new prototyping tool called Torch AR.
